Ravens missing 3 starters at minicamp

The Baltimore Ravens were missing three starters from their minicamp, although there was at least a reason for the absence of one.

Defensive tackle Haloti Ngata is back at Oregon trying to earn his degree and was not in camp.

The team was also missing safety Ed Reed and running back Willis McGahee, and it is unknown why they were not present.

The good news is that tight end Todd Heap and wide receiver Derrick Mason both returned after missing earlier minicamps with various injuries.

Anderson put on reserve-retired list

The Baltimore Ravens have placed offensive tackle Willie Anderson on the reserve-retired list.

The move comes as a huge surprise considering Anderson had not hinted at all about retiring from the NFL.

The Ravens were either going to have him compete with rookie Michael Oher for the starting job or possibly cut him to save room under the salary cap.

The rumor around the NFL is that Anderson and the Ravens knew he was retiring but didn’t want to announce it before the draft.

They were afraid such news could have given other teams and idea of who they may have wanted to draft.

Ravens sign Washington

The Baltimore Ravens have signed veteran wide receiver Kelly Washington to a one-year contract.

Washington was one of three veteran wide receivers the Ravens brought in to minicamp to get a closer look at what they might bring to the table.

His ability to play special teams as well as some nice catches ultimately resulted in a contract offer.

The team also like the fact that Washington is now their tallent wideout, making him a terrific red zone target.

Ravens sign QB Beck

The Baltimore Ravens have signed quarterback John Beck, who was just recently cut by the Miami Dolphins.

Beck is now reunited with offensive coordinator Cam Cameron, who was formerly the head coach in Miami.

The Ravens are hopeful that Cameron can mold Beck into at least a solid backup quarterback.

The team is concerned that Troy Smith may elect to jump ship and find a starting job elsewhere, leaving them without a dependable backup.

The signing of Beck means it is likely that third-string quarterback Todd Bouman will be released.

Ravens take Oher in first round

The Baltimore Ravens traded up from No. 26 to No. 23 to grab tackle Michael Oher with their first round draft pick.

The Ravens had Oher rated as their No. 5 offensive player in the entire draft and couldn’t believe how far he had slipped.

Oher slipped down the board because many teams were concerned with his ability to pick up an NFL offense.

Oher will likely play right tackle for the Ravens and compete with veteran Willie Anderson for the starting job.

He also has the ability to eventually move over to left tackle should Jared Gaither leave via free agency, get injured or not pan out.
