Former Baltimore Ravens kicker Matt Stover announced his retirement from the NFL, and he did so by returning home to the organization where he spent almost his entire career.
Stover had a press conference at the Ravens’ Owings Mills headquarters to announce his decision, thanking everyone with the organization from the owner and general manager to the ball boy.
He retires after 20 years in the NFL, 13 of which he spent in Baltimore after the Browns moved from Cleveland to Charm City.
He holds a ton of team records that will probably never be broken, and he is among the top 10 all-time in many NFL kicking statistical categories. The kicker also scored the only points for a five game stretch during the team’s Super Bowl season in 2000. Without his clutch leg, it’s hard to envision a scenario where the team would have brought the Lombardi Trophy back to Baltimore. ( Read More…)

With the NFL still in a lockout, several Baltimore Ravens players are setting up an informal workout so that they can remain in shape and keep in touch with each other.
Ray Lewis, Derrick Mason and Joe Flacco have organized workouts at Towson University from May 24-26. They will begin the day with an hour lifting session and then do various drills for another three hours before calling it a day.
Several other teams have already completed such sessions, with the New Orleans Saints coming up with the largest attendance. Drew Brees was able to get nearly the entire team together, which is a testament to his leadership.
The Ravens aren’t expecting to have all their players in attendance, but about half the team is likely to show up for the workouts. It remains to be seen how much can be gained from such workouts without coaches present, and a few days of physical activity is not going to be enough to keep them in shape heading into the season, if there is one.
Flacco has actually already gotten some of his wide receivers and tight ends together out in Arizona to run some routes and catch passes. Todd Heap and Anquan Boldin both live out in the desert and the weather is nice, making it a logical choice.
