Suggs win DPOY award

Baltimore Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs has been named the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year after his best season in the league.

Suggs finished with 14 sacks, which was the highest in the AFC, and also recorded 70 tackles, 55 of which were of the solo variety.

He is highly regarded across the league because of his ability to rush the passer while also still being very stout against the run.

The linebacker was rather quiet in the team’s two playoff games, which is part of the reason the Ravens were sitting at home watching the Super Bowl. ( Read More…)

Ravens fall to Patriots, 23-20

The Baltimore Ravens found a new, more devastating way to lose this time around, falling to the New England Patriots with a Super Bowl berth on the line, 23-20.

After last year’s debacle, the Ravens managed to drop the game-winning touchdown pass and then absolutely shank the game-tying field goal that could have sent the game into overtime.

Lee Evans nearly had his second foot down in the end zone when he was stripped of the ball, and Billy Cundiff missed a 32-yard field goal by shanking it way left.

Despite a slow start in the first quarter, Joe Flacco played a tremendous game to silence his critics, throwing for 306 yards and a couple of touchdowns. ( Read More…)

Ravens hold off Texans, 20-13

It wasn’t pretty, but the Baltimore Ravens used a strong defensive effort in the second half to hold off the pesky Houston Texans, 20-13.

The Ravens used four turnovers to their advantage, building a 17-3 lead in the early going and looking like they might turn the game into a blowout.

Instead, Houston responded by pounding away with running back Arian Foster, who had a monster second quarter to finish with well over 100 yards rushing.

With a 17-13 lead heading into halftime, the Ravens defense regrouped and came out of the locker room intent on shutting down the Houston running game.

The Ravens did a much better job on Foster in the final 30 minutes, and will now head to New England with a chance to play in the Super Bowl on the line.

Ravens get past Bengals, win AFC North

The Baltimore Ravens got off to a quick start and then held on for a 24-16 win over the Cincinnati Bengals and their second AFC North title.

It was a good thing that the Ravens were able to pull out the victory, as the Steelers held on to get a win over the rival Cleveland Browns.

Ray Rice had two touchdown runs of 50 yards or more, finishing the day with 191 yards on the ground.

Joe Flacco was 15-19 through the air for one touchdown. The key statistics for Flacco included just one sack and no fumbles or interceptions.

The victory gives the Ravens a bye and at least one home playoff game, so they now get two full weeks of rest to get healthy before taking the field again.

Ravens escape against Browns, 20-14

The Baltimore Ravens built a 17-point lead only to have to hold on to sneak past the Cleveland Browns for a 20-14 victory.

Running back Ray Rice scored twice, once on the ground and once through the air, as the Ravens finished the year undefeated at home.

Baltimore managed just one field goal in a lethargic second half and allowed a punt return for a touchdown by Josh Cribbs.

The team also had some significant injuries to deal with after the game, though the status of several of those players remains unclear. ( Read More…)

Boldin out two weeks

Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Anquan Boldin will miss at least the next two weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a partially torn meniscus.

Boldin has struggled in recent weeks to gain separation from defenders, which has never been one of his strengths to begin with.

The Ravens remain hopeful that Boldin will be 100 percent in time for their first playoff game, for which the date has yet to be determined.

Baltimore still has a chance to win the division and a first-round bye, but going to Cincinnati in the season finale without Boldin will be tough. ( Read More…)

Ravens routed by Chargers, 34-14

The Baltimore Ravens lost control of their own destiny in the AFC playoff race with a 34-14 loss to the San Diego Chargers.

The momentum of the game seemed to turn when kicker Billy Cundiff missed a 36-yard field goal on the opening drive of the game.

It also didn’t help that the Ravens squandered two potential touchdown passes on that same drive.

The Ravens tied the game at 7-7, but would trail 17-7 at halftime and watched as the game quickly got out of hand. ( Read More…)

Ravens stunned by Seahawks, 22-17

The Baltimore Ravens lost to yet another inferior opponent, this time laying an egg against the Seattle Seahawks, 22-17.

The Ravens got off to yet another slow start, falling behind 10-0 before finally starting to get things going.

However, after scoring a touchdown to draw within three, the Ravens fell behind 22-7 before mounting a fourth quarter rally.

David Reed was the biggest contributor to the loss, fumbling twice returning kickoffs and also getting called for an unsportsmanlike penalty. ( Read More…)

Ravens stun Steelers, 23-20

The Baltimore Ravens picked up quite possibly one of the biggest wins in franchise history with a 23-20 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Ravens, who lead much of the game and seemed to outplay Pittsburgh, surrendered the lead with just over five minutes to play.

With just over two minutes to play, Joe Flacco lead the Ravens on a 92-yard drive that resulted in the game-winning touchdown pass to Torrey Smith with just seconds to go.

The Ravens overcame Smith’s drop in the end zone that occurred just a few plays earlier, one that would usually seem to doom the Ravens. ( Read More…)

Ravens rally past Cardinals, 30-27

The Baltimore Ravens averted a disaster for the second straight week with a furious rally in the final 30 minutes for a 30-27 victory over the Arizona Cardinals.

For the second straight time at home against Arizona, it took a field goal as time expired for the Ravens to escape with a victory.

The Ravens offense sputtered once again in the first half and the special teams wasn’t much better, and the Ravens went into the locker room trailing 24-6.

Baltimore’s offense abandoned the running game and went primarily to a no-huddle, shotgun system in the second half, and Joe Flacco played much better.

Now the Ravens must turn around and get ready for the biggest game of the season to date: a showdown Sunday night in Heinz Field against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
